地元の図書館に行ったら、平日だというのにいつもと違って大混雑です。若い高校生が多い。何で？と思ったら、11月14日（金）は「県民の日」とかで学校が休みらしいのでした。
それで、いつもなら悠々と座れる2階の「調べもの専用席兼パソコン利用席」の8席のうち7席もいっぱいでした。残る席は「持ち込みパソコン利用専用席」で、わざわざ「利用票」を予約しなければいけません。普段でしたら、面倒臭いのでそんな席には座りませんが、そこしか空いていないので、仕方ありません。
2階の受付カウンターに行ったら、分厚い眼鏡をかけた白髪混じりの還暦前後の痩せた女性が、実に面倒臭そうに、「その席は、電源付きの持ち込みパソコン利用専用席ですよ」と官僚的に目も合わさずに応えるのでした。
「分かってますよ」。私も同じように面倒臭そうに応じました。
でも、1階で、最新号の週刊誌を借りて来ていたので、しばらく、その席で週刊誌を読んでいました。そしたら、後ろから忍者のように忍び寄って来たさっきの受付老婆が、いつの間にか、私の席の後ろに立っていて、「その席は、電源付きの持ち込みパソコン利用専用席ですから、パソコンに電源を入れてください」と、また全く同じような言辞を繰り返して詰問するのです。
「お前はスパイか⁉︎」と、さすがに監視されていたことを不愉快を感じましたねえ。
実に恐ろしい図書館です。もう2度と「持ち込みパソコン利用専用席」なんかに利用するものか！
A truly dreadful library
When I went to my local library, it was unusually crowded for a weekday. There were a lot of young high school students. I wondered why, and then I realized that November 14th was “Prefectural Citizens’ Day” (Kenmin no Hi) and schools were closed.
Because of this, seven out of the eight seats in the usual “Research/PC Use Area” on the second floor—where I can usually sit comfortably—were taken. The only remaining seat was the “Dedicated Seat for Personal Laptops,” which required me to specifically reserve a “Usage Ticket.” Normally, I would avoid such a troublesome seat, but since it was the only one available, I had no choice.
When I went to the second-floor reception counter, a thin, spectacled woman nearing sixty with salt-and-pepper hair, looking utterly bothered, responded bureaucratically without making eye contact, “That seat is exclusively for personal laptops and has a power outlet.”
“I know that,” I replied with a similar look of annoyance.
However, I had borrowed the latest weekly magazine from the first floor, so I spent some time reading it in that seat. Then, like a ninja sneaking up from behind, the same elderly receptionist woman suddenly appeared and was standing right behind my chair. She repeated the exact same phrase and challenged me: “That seat is exclusively for personal laptops with a power outlet, so please turn your laptop power on.”
“Are you a spy!?” I thought. I was truly displeased that I had been watched.
It is a truly dreadful library. I swear I will never use a “Dedicated Seat for Personal Laptops” again!
