今年8月17日に開催された「反田恭平 ザルツブルク音楽祭デビュー」をテレビで観ました。ザルツブルク音楽祭とは、勿論、毎年夏にモーツァルトの故郷であるオーストリアのザルツブルクで開催される音楽祭のことです。
正直言いまして、反田恭平さんは、2021年のショパン国際ピアノコンクールで、日本人歴代最高位タイ（1970年の内田光子以来51年ぶり２人目）の第2位に入賞したピアニストということをニュースで知ったぐらいで、彼の演奏会をフォローしたわけでもありませんでした。
今回初めて、テレビ画面ながら、彼のパフォーマンスを観たわけですが、度肝を抜かれましたね。何故なら、彼は指揮をしながらピアノ演奏（ピアノ協奏曲「戴冠式」など）していたからです。ということは、彼はピアニストだけでなく、指揮者でもあり、自分の楽団まで持っているマルチな才能に溢れた人だということを私は知らなかったのです。
実は、ピアノを弾きながら指揮もする人は、類まれではなく、私の愛聴盤の一つである「モーツァルトのピアノ協奏曲第21番と第17番」では、ウラジーミル・アシュケナージがピアノ演奏と指揮を兼ねていました。当時は動画はなかったので、CDジャケットを見て、想像するしかありませんでしたが、確かにジャケ写では、アシュケナージが、フィルハーモニア管弦楽団を指揮しながら、ピアノの前に座っています。
それが、今回、反田恭平さんのパフォーマンスで初めて、ピアノと指揮を同時に兼ねる様子を拝見出来たのです。ピアノはショパン・コンクール２位の腕前なので当然ですが、容易ではない指揮術まで同時に会得するとは、これはまさに「二刀流」です。ドジャースの大谷翔平選手といい、今の若い人は、本家本元、本場の外国で、堂々と勝負して世界的に認められ、昔では考えられないことを成し遂げているわけで、奇跡的に彼らと同時代に生きた幸せを感じます。
凄い人が現れた、と思いながら、反田恭平さんのことを検索してみたら、彼はまだ1994年生まれの31歳だということを知りました。私は、仕事でオーストリア政府観光局の招待でウイーンやザルツブルクに一度行ったことがありますが、確か、1992年のことでしたから、彼はまだ生まれていなかったんですね。
また、彼は母親がエレクトーンを趣味で弾くぐらいで、父親はサラリーマンの家庭らしいのですが、非凡な音楽的才能に恵まれ、楽譜は2度見たぐらいで暗譜できるようです。これなら、複雑なスコアを読み解く指揮も出来ますね。
クラシック好きの皆さんにとっては、何でもない当たり前の話でしたが、私は、これから彼の演奏会に注目したいと思っています。ただし、彼のチケットは今、最も手に入りにくいらしいですね。仕方ない、動画で我慢しますか…。今では、一生掛かっても見られないぐらいの動画がアップされていますから。

Kyohei Sorita’s Salzburg Festival debut was breathtaking.
I watched the broadcast of Kyohei Sorita’s Salzburg Festival debut which took place this year on August 17th. The Salzburg Festival is, of course, the annual music festival held in the summer in Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart.
To be honest, I only knew Kyohei Sorita through the news when he won second place at the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, tying the highest rank ever achieved by a Japanese competitor (the second Japanese person to do so in 51 years, since Mitsuko Uchida in 1970). I hadn’t followed his concert career closely.
This was the first time I saw his performance, albeit on a TV screen, and I was completely blown away. This was because he was conducting the orchestra while playing the piano (in pieces like the Piano Concerto “Coronation”). I hadn’t realized that he was not only a pianist but also a conductor who even owns his own orchestra—a person brimming with multiple talents.
In fact, a pianist who also conducts is not entirely rare. On one of my favorite CDs, “Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 21 and 17,” Vladimir Ashkenazy served as both pianist and conductor. Since video wasn’t available then, I could only imagine it from the CD jacket, which indeed showed Ashkenazy seated at the piano while conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.
This performance by Kyohei Sorita was the first time I actually witnessed a simultaneous piano and conducting performance. His piano skills, naturally, are those of a Chopin Competition runner-up, but mastering the difficult art of conducting at the same time is truly a “Nitoryu” (two-sword style). Just like Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, these young people are confidently competing abroad, gaining global recognition, and achieving things that were unthinkable in the past. I feel incredibly fortunate to be living in the same era as them.
Thinking what an amazing person he is, I searched for Kyohei Sorita and learned that he was born in 1994, making him just 31 years old. I once visited Vienna and Salzburg for work, invited by the Austrian Tourist Office—that was around 1992, so he hadn’t even been born yet.
I also learned that he comes from a typical salaried family; his mother just played the Electone as a hobby. Yet, he is gifted with musical genius and can apparently memorize a score after only looking at it twice. That explains how he can also conduct, reading complex scores simultaneously.
For classical music enthusiasts, this may all be common knowledge, but I plan to pay close attention to his concerts from now on. Although, I hear his tickets are currently the hardest to get! Well, I suppose I’ll have to settle for videos for now… There are now so many uploaded videos that one couldn’t watch them all in a lifetime.
